Grilled Figs Smothered in Goat Cheese and Truffle Oil: Summer Decadence

Figs are my absolute favorite summer fruit, but here in Chicago they’re only around for a few weeks. Blink and you’ll miss them. I scan the fruit bins as soon as I walk into the supermarket, searching for their feminine curves and midnight blue hues. And once I spot them, I lose my head a little, filling my cart with multiple baskets of sweet, honey figs.

My favorite variety is the dark purple black mission fig. I love to eat them raw, just pop off the stem and fill my cheeks with their ridiculously sweet juice. They’re amazing coarsely chopped on yogurt or granola, but if you grill them for a moment, they become positively mind blowing good. Each grilled fig explodes in your mouth, a warm, gooey mess of summer sweetness.

Figs have a long reputation as aphrodisiacs, but when you grill them, they become positively sensual. They’re bruised, fragile, yet opened up just for you. This is the fruit for a warm and romantic summer evening.

Toss them in a little olive oil to keep them from sticking to the grates, and grill them for45 seconds to a minute, no more. Figs are so laden with sugar that they caramelize on the grill very quickly, and will dissolve if you leave them on for any length of time. You could serve them simply grilled, but I like to smother them with soft cream cheese and drizzle them with a little truffle oil to really indulge.

After all, figs like these will be gone so quickly, every day serving figs is a great excuse to really indulge by preparing them with the finest ingredients. Just being able to throw figs on the grill is a luxury, so you might as well drizzle them with a little truffle oil.

Celebrate summer by throwing some figs on the grill. This is pure summer luxury.
Serves: 16 half figs Serves 4
Ingredients
  • 1 cup of Fresh Mission Figs
  • 3 TBSPs of olive oil
  • 1 log of soft goat cheese (8 TBSPs at least)
  • 2 TSPs of truffle oil (I like to use grapeseed truffle oil as it has a longer shelf life)
Instructions
  1. Preheat grill to medium heat.
  2. Rinse the figs and place them in a bowl.
  3. Drizzle them with olive oil and massage them very gently to get them evenly covered.
  4. Grill the figs on indirect heat for 45 to 60 seconds. Remove and place on a platter.
  5. Split the figs in half. Slather a chunk of goat cheese on each half and spread gently.
  6. Drizzle truffle oil and eat immediately.
  7. Don't forget to close your eyes and moan. This summer fruit feast is definitely moan worthy!

  1. Have you tried using truffle butter vs the oil? I’m torn honestly–Whole Foods was OUT of truffle butter which I love on steak et al and I was tempted to buy the truffle oil but I’ve never used it. And I just picked up a glorious pack of mission figs at Trader Joes the other day so I’m dying to try this!

    • I too love truffle butter (and porcini butter) but I think the butter might be too much with the figs. The truffle oil keeps a long time and is just a slight drizzle here.
