|Worshiping chocolate at Max Brenner’s Chocolate Restaurant|
Just like that, the weekend was over. The bags were packed. The goodbyes were said. Plans to reunite over roast turkey and cranberry sauce were made with cousins. Promises were exchanged to email, call, stay in better touch…. this time.
We looked at our watches and did the math. We had ninety minutes left in New York City. Ninety minutes til we packed the kids in their last yellow cab and headed to Laguardia. The timing was tight, extremely tight, and we started telling the kids that we wouldn’t be able to squeeze in a visit to Max Brenner’s, Chocolate by the Bald Man this trip. We were being adults, responsible parents, trying to play it safe. But just like we pick our battles, so do the kids. They were willing to fight to the death for their right to visit the temple of chocolate, Willy Wonka’s factory come to life.
So we capitulated. Miraculously, we hit no traffic on the way down to 14th street, and found no line at the restaurant. In less than 15 minutes, we were sitting happily surrounded by pipes of molten chocolate, pondering whether to have waffles, s’mores, or simply a giant chocolate syringe.
This was one battle I was happy to lose.
