>Family Dinner Conversation Starters

A few months ago, I attended an event hosted by Ragu all about Family Dinners. After I received this swag bag filled with goodies to assist me in making family dinner with Ragu sauces like baking pans, measuring cups, and other cooking tools. But there was one item in the swag bag that made me laugh out loud because it seemed like such a gimmick: a green cube filled with family conversation starters.

“How silly,” I thought, “what family is so disconnected that they actually need cards to help them get their conversation started?”

But my kids discovered the card set when they were going through my bag, and they were immediately intrigued. They broke them out that night, and have been breaking them out every night since. It turns out these Family Table Topics are a huge hit. They’ve gotten our family dinners way beyond the “how was your day” type of conversation and into the funniest and wildest topics.

The questions are interesting for both kids and adult, and rarely fail to get us into an unexpected and entertaining discussion. Some of the more memorable ones include:

  • If you could have any hair color, what would it be?
  • Would you rather fly or be invisible?
  • Is it more fun to be a parent or a child?
  • What person would you most like to meet and what would you want to ask them?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up?

The table topics cards come in many editions. We have the family one. It currently retails for $25 both at the Table Topics site and $24.99 at Amazon (Is that just so you miss the free shipping by a penny? Probably). The cube contains 135 question cards, and after 2 months, we are nowhere near the end.
